General information for beginner pilots

Flight start

The standard of knowledge you expect to achieve is the same for each school of pilots. Still, the program and training methods may differ, as they are determined by the team of instructors, the type of starting process, the aerological specificity of the training place, the requirements of additional technical equipment, and the weather conditions on different days.

After you have mastered the control of a paraglider on the ground - which is not as easy as it looks! - You will continue to learn how to take off properly and land. Your first flights will be in a straight line just a few meters above the ground.

When you show that you can safely and confidently behave in the air and land successfully, the instructor will begin to push you so that you can climb higher uphill. With this extra height, you will learn how to make more complex manoeuvres.

A few days of training will give you enough knowledge and piloting skills to pass the entry-level Pilot exam. Also, in the practical exercises, you will get acquainted with the introductory course of flight theory. Then, you will need to pass a simple written exam on the initial basics of Paragliding.

Achieving the title of Pilot entry level is the first step in the hierarchy of the Pilot Rating.

Pilot rating

Pilot Rating was designed to encourage pilots to progress their flying skills and provide a quick and easy way to indicate the level of Paragliding for other pilots. The first level of Paragliding is simple enough to achieve, but the following levels will require much more effort and new knowledge from you.

Title - The entry-level pilot is awarded to the pilot school during basic flight training to mark the successful completion of the initial course and indicate your suitability for further education in school, which is necessary to obtain the first-level pilot title.

The pilot of the first level means that the pilot knows all the basics of the formal piloting course and has enough piloting skills to perform independent flights. Important! Pilots at the first level continue to improve their skills and should seek advice and guidance from instructors during flights.

Pilot of the second level. Now, you can consider yourself a qualified pilot in the truest sense. You possess all-around skills and abilities and enough experience to know how and when to implement them! It would help if you had this rank before embarking on XC flights.

Advanced pilot - the highest rank in Paragliding. These pilots are the principal owners of their wings and can enjoy flights to the fullest.

After completing the initial Paragliding course, you will have a Flight Book, which will list all your flights and titles. This book will be with you always after the end of flight school.

Breaking Limits: Toni Brügger's Historic 301 km Triangle on MENTOR 7 Light

On June 17, 2023, Team Pilot Toni Brügger soared to new heights, achieving a flat 301 km triangle with his NOVA MENTOR 7 Light. Departing from his home in Kandersteg, Switzerland, Toni navigated the skies for over 11 hours, setting turn points at Mont Blanc and Lake Lucerne, averaging an impressive 28.51 km/h. This extraordinary flight not only marks the longest triangle in Paragliding history with an EN B glider but also stands as only the second EN B 300 km triangle. A colossal achievement deserving of congratulations.

Forecasting Skies: Weather Insights for Paragliders

Understanding weather conditions is vital for every paraglider. The anticipation of tomorrow's weather, or even a week ahead, is crucial, especially when your flight location is miles away. Will the journey be worth it, or will you face disappointment due to unfavorable conditions? It's essential to predict whether we'll encounter rain, excessive wind, or an inversion layer too low for thermal currents.

The Evolution of Paragliding: A Soaring History

Tracing its roots back to the 1960s, the paraglider emerged from a military need to train paratroopers in safe landings. Originally, paratroopers were towed to heights by trucks using ropes. After reaching the necessary altitude, the tow rope was released, allowing them to practice landings. Intrigued by the hovering experience more than the landing itself, many skydivers started launching themselves from hills, discovering ways to utilize air currents to extend their flight time.
